The late antique Achilles is a perpetual source of embarrassment for his teachers. The extraordinary hero we know from the Iliad is depicted in late antique texts as a young man who is in constant need of instruction and guidance. This paper will briefly present a selection of such texts, dating from the second to the sixth centuries CE, and ask how and why this young Achilles became an emblem for the students' (and their teachers') struggles against the perils of passion.
