The course is designed to provide students with fundamental background information on the Nordic history, mythology and literature in the Middle Ages, which form a part of our common European cultural heritage. It will also give an overview of the major phonetical, grammatical and morphological features of the Old Norse language giving the students a chance to get a precious insight on the rich imagery of old Icelandic literature.
Furthermore, students will have the chance to attend a translation workshop led by experienced translators in order to acquire some basic skills in the translation of various texts from the Old Icelandic literature and put themselves to test by working first hand on excerpts from different literary genres, from prose to epic to court poetry.
